Where to eat in Bucharest

Dining in Bucharest was a perfect blend of different experiences all while trying out varying atmospheres, settings and menus. Each of them had something to contribute to my “where to eat in Bucharest”-list and if you have had the chance to visit any of these places, let me know.

Little did we know that upon stepping inside “Kane” we were up for the greatest food adventure of our entire three-week road trip

1. Kane

Little did we know that upon stepping inside Kane we were up for the greatest food adventure of our entire three-week road trip through Romania. Since we couldn’t get much out of the restaurant’s homepage, however reading plenty of great reviews, we decided to give it a try and oh boy, was it worth it. The interior is refreshingly modern unlike most other restaurants in Bucharest which emphasize on the historical relation, not Kane though. As entering the restaurant, not knowing what to expect, we were welcomed by a friendly staff and even though we hadn’t made a reservation, they still managed to find a table and even a vegetarian version of each course for me. Everything revolving the food is turned into an extra-ordinary experience, starting with the presentation of the food and then the food itself. The attention to the detail of every course is undeniably visible and the unique tastes and combinations made it an amazing experience dining at Kane.

Stepping into Caru’ cu bere is an experience itself

2. Caru' cu bere

Stepping into Caru’ cu bere is an experience itself and the 140-year long history that lays behind this restaurant is stunning. In 1879 an uncle and his two nephews came to Bucharest from beyond the mountains in Transylvania, which at that time was part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, to open “Caru’ cu bere”, which translates into “beer wagon”. At the beginning, “Caru’ cu bere” was a brewery and beer house and after many years of hard work, the third and youngest brother of the family managed in 1899 to open the famous restaurant in the newly constructed building. Today, the building is recognized as an architectural and historical monument and that itself is a reason to visit this restaurant. What you can expect from this restaurant is a decent, traditional Romanian cuisine served in a nice atmosphere. We were lucky to experience a concert of a string quartet during our stay which enhanced the historical flair of this place even more.

Inside these low-key settings you will find a gem of authenticity, hospitality and decent food

3. Vatra

Dining at Vatra was certainly a memorable experience. Nestled on a quiet side street, close to the Old Town and even closer to the Cismigiu Park, lays this highly recommendable restaurant. What makes this restaurant so special is the great hospitality and very friendly staff who welcomes you inside an authentic atmosphere. And then there is the menu, offering all the best the Romanian cuisine has to offer in the form of big portions of tasty, local dishes. Inside these low-key settings you will find a gem of authenticity, hospitality and decent food.

The restaurant is located inside a historical building with a strong connection to the Neo-Gothical and Art Nouveau style

4. Hanu' Berarilor Casa Elena Lupescu

At the evening of our arrival, we were looking for a good restaurant not too far away from our hotel and thus after a short 20-minutes' walk we entered this restaurant which has a stunningly beautiful interior, as do many historical buildings in Bucharest. The restaurant is located inside a historical building with a strong connection to the Neo-Gothical and Art Nouveau style, which once was the property of Elena Lupescu, a mistress and last wife of Romania’s former King Carol II. The building stretches over two levels and is surrounded by a large courtyard and garden which with its relaxing atmosphere invites to sit outside on a warm summer night, sipping a Romanian wine or two. Since we had chosen to dine inside this elegant and refined place, we had almost the entire restaurant to ourselves, as people preferred to sit outside, which was completely understandable. The restaurant is a great blend of a modern as well as a traditional cuisine served in an elegant ambience.

Trying their cakes will bring you on a delicious journey through the world of cakes

5. Angeline

You know I’m always up for a sweet treat. So, when my boyfriend suggested to have a dessert at a lovely place he had found, obviously I was all up for it. I was even more thrilled when we approached the cake boutique seeing the lovingly decorated exterior which already made me so excited for it before even entering the store. But the toughest part was yet to come – making the right decision of choosing the best cake and let me tell you, this was the absolute hardest decision that day, because the selection is immense, and every cake looks equally divine. The passion for creating something truly special can be evidently tasted in the cakes they create; the taste of the complex combination of flavours which bursts into an overwhelming outbreak in your mouth. Trying their cakes will bring you on a delicious journey through the world of cakes.
